From Safari to Street

From Safari to Street: 66 Motorcycles’ XR600

This Honda XR600 was set up for the Australasian Safari. It's now retired, and starting a new life as a very classy street tracker.

Few motorcycles can tackle the Australian outback as well as a Honda XR600. This is the machine that kick-started Honda’s 18-year Baja 1000 winning streak, and the reliability and raw power of the mighty XR have made it a desert racing legend.
The 1996 model we’re looking at here was originally set up for the brutal Australasian Safari. And it was pretty tired by the time Sixty-Six Motorcycles of Perth got their hands on it.

“It’d had a hard life smashing through the outback, and was showing its age,” says Sixty-Six’s Peter Ellery. “We decided to create a thumper which had attitude, but with a clean aesthetic.”
Peter’s first port of call was finding the right fuel tank—but the frame’s awkward backbone complicated matters. Eventually the team settled on a Honda CB250 unit. “It had the right proportions and a period look—so the tunnel was modified and on she went!”

Next, they lopped off the XR600’s subframe and fabricated a new, slimmer one to complement the tank’s lines. Resting on top is a custom-made tan leather seat.
Thanks to a pair of 17” SM Pro rims, the stance of this XR600 is now more motard than desert racer. The rims are laced to Talon hubs, and wrapped in Shinko 705 rubber. The front forks have been rebuilt and lowered to suit the smaller wheels.

Sixty-Six redid all the XR’s wiring too—in the process moving the ignition to under the seat in a neat little aluminum box. They also installed and rejetted a Mikuni TM40 flat-slide carb. The new exhaust muffler is an off-the-shelf item. (According to Peter, it took a few mandrel bends to make it fit the header pipe.)

There’s a 7” headlight up front, and the turn signals, tail light, mini-switches, grips and mirrors are from Posh Japan. But the heat shields, chain guard and single-sided front fender bracket were all made in-house.

Sixty-Six opted to finish the XR600 (now dubbed “X ON”) in subtle hues. Dave Williams handled the tank, while the frame was powder-coated black and the engine painted in a black wrinkle.

It’s the perfect retirement for a bruised old racer. We reckon it’ll be just as much fun on the street as it was in the sand.

Kawasaki W650 by Schlachtwerk

W650 Light

Based on a 1999 Kawasaki W650... At Schlachtwerk, they say this bike weights only 168kg with full tank... They get rid of 47kg of useless parts... Not bad.

Cafe Racer Dreams NX650

Cafe Racer Dreams NX650

Honda NX650 custom motorcycle

I’m starting to wonder if the NX650 is set to replace the CB750 as the favorite Honda platform for custom builders. In Europe, a Honda Dominator is easy to find: it was the ubiquitous inner-city dispatch bike. Tough, reliable and comfortable on the dirt as well as the asphalt, it’s an underrated all-rounder.
This is another NX650-based traffic stopper from Spain’s Cafe Racer Dreams. Built for a client based in the Mediterranean town of Nice, it’s sporting an alloy tank from a Yamaha XT500. The sleek new look is enhanced by black Renthal Ultra Low bars and CRD’s own lights front and rear, also finished in black (and now on sale in their stylish online store).

The battery is now hidden under the seat, which is custom-fabricated in vintage-style brown leather—a perfect foil for the green and silver tank and sand-colored frame.

The NX650’s bulletproof 644 cc air-cooled motor—good for 50 mpg—required no modification, aside from a K&N intake and a sinuous custom-fabricated exhaust system, which now exits much lower than stock, down by the swingarm.

The standard rear shock, a weak point on the NX650, has been upgraded to an Öhlins item, and the rims are Excel. The front wheel has gone down a couple of inches in size to 19”, and the rear has gone up an inch to 18”, for a more balanced look.

BLITZ Honda CM125

Honda 'ORANGE MÉCANIQUE'

 The whole bike has been worked out and modified: - handcrafted subframe; - handcrafted electricity box welded to the frame;
You must have, like us, some day, crossed the path of an incredibly ugly and still reliable bike.
The Honda CM 125, to us, belongs to this category.
We were inspired, in a way, by the famous 750 HD XR Dirt Track for this project.
And we guess you should understand why we called it "Orange Mécanique".

While the whole frame, wheels, handlebar and crankcase covers have been freshly repainted (shiny black powdercoating), a genuine Honda XL tank was mounted as found. Like we love.

Going Dutch

Going Dutch: Boy Janssen’s XT 600 desert sled

This custom Yamaha XT 600 was built to follow a Dutch rally team around Morocco.

Most custom bikes lead pretty easy lives. Even scramblers and dirt trackers are likely to spend more time on road than off. But this tough Yamaha XT 600 is the real deal—built to follow a rally team through North Africa.
It belongs to Boy Janssen, who recently swapped the streets of Amsterdam for a quieter life in the Dutch countryside. “Some people thought we were crazy, but the move made perfect sense for us,” he says. “We’re in the middle of the best back roads, and living in a house with a workshop.”

Boy is now building bikes full time, and the XT 600 is the first bike to roll out of his new Pancake Customs workshop. It’s already had a good shakedown: in April, Boy handled spannering duties for the Black Ram team during the Libya rally.
It’s an ‘extreme desert challenge‘ that’s held in Morocco rather than Libya, with seven brutal stages running over 2,400 kilometers. “There was some space left over in our 6×6 truck,” says Boy. “As a bike builder I didn’t want to take a stock bike, so I started this project.”

“The first thing to go was that awful XT 600 subframe with the integrated muffler, and the fuel tank. I really like the Triumph desert sleds from the 1960s, and that was my inspiration for the rear end.”
It’s now much cleaner, with a simple metal fender tucked under the new rear frame loop.

After testing several different tanks, Boy found a neglected DT400 unit—and it’s a perfect match. Right behind is a custom seat with a practical heavy canvas cover, built by local specialist Silver Machine.
All the electronic components are now hidden under the tank, and connected with a new wiring loom. It’s a battery-free setup.

Up front, Boy has shaved the top triple tree and positioned the bars a little bit lower than usual. He’s also made a frontplate housing two compact lights—a modern take on the desert sled look.
The Yamaha XT 600 engine is usually bulletproof, and this one was no exception. After a thorough check and a few adjustments to suit the foam pod filters, it was good to go.

Like the other mods, the exhaust system is simple and effective—exiting under the seat and out of harm’s way in case of a crash.
The only thing left was to fit Heidenau K60 rubber and apply a fresh layer of flat black powder coat. It’s now the perfect machine for ripping up the dunes—or the dirt tracks of rural Holland.
